Marquette committee seeks assistance

To the Journal editor:

2018 is a milestone year for the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee Inc. We turn 40! On July 15 we will be celebrating our collaborative effort with the city of Marquette, the DNR trust fund, the Iron Ore Heritage Trail Network, the DDA and others to formally dedicate the Father Marquette Park.

We professionally restored the statue’s reliefs for our 35th anniversary and we have been working since then to raise funds to make the park handicap-accessible, install security cameras, lighting and educational signage. A $200,000 grant from the DNR trust fund (our committee’s match was $60,000) enabled the final construction.

We are planning a large, permanent plaque to honor donors making a tax deductible contribution of $500 or more. The deadline for donations for the plaque is May 15. However, donations of all sizes are welcome! Checks payable to MBRC may be mailed to PO Box 334, Marquette, MI 49855, or donate through our website mqtbeautification.org.

The new Father Marquette Park will showcase our history and help beautify our downtown. Please join us on Sunday, July 15 for the park dedication at 2 p.m. followed by a community-wide 40th Anniversary Celebration on the boardwalk below the Hampton Inn.
