Being proactive

To the Journal editor:

I would like to make reference to a statement made at the Negaunee School Board meeting on Feb. 19 during public comment. The comment made, was that the school should be proactive rather than reactive.

The staff in Negaunee schools have been involved in anti-bullying for several years.

Negaunee schools have presented the following speakers on bullying, harassment, cyber bullying, treating people with dignity and respect, suicide and mental illness: Todd Wilton, Homeland Security; Jeff Martin, Michigan State Police; Bob Lenz, Standing Up for the Value of Every Person; and Eric Hipple and Chad Hale from Pathways.

OK2Say, a program designed to empower students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs and law enforcement to share and respond to safety threats. To stop harmful behavior, this is a confidential reporting hotline. Tips go to schools, local law enforcement, and mental health agencies.

The student handbook states that students should report all bullying to the administrators.

It is the responsibility of each student to hear, to listen, and to put into practice what they have heard at the recent assemblies.
