Group much too conservative
To the Journal editor:
Since 1982, the Federalist Society has become an exceedingly influential organization, tilting the federal judiciary to the right during the last 35 years — all the way up to the Supreme Court.
Their originalist interpretation of the U.S. Constitution is a thought process that allows no room for evolution concerning the problems facing America today or in its future.
Their encouragement led George W. Bush to terminate a 50-year practice of rating qualifications for judicial nominees. Bush then back-filled federal courts with judges who embrace a right-wing legal ideology. It’s no surprise that attacks on women’s health, the environment, civil rights and civil liberty’s have intensified since that time.
Federalist justices’ have equated a single-shot musket of the 1770s that protected home and hearth the same weight as mass produced, mass acquired assault rifles of today. Continually, we are reminded the horrors of that ruling.
Federalist justices’ support for Citizens United enabled corporations/big money donors and foreign interests to shield their contributions by funneling money through entities not required to disclose donor information and bestowed Constitutional rights upon them. Democrats believe individual rights should be preeminent in the U.S. Constitution.
Lawsuits against Dodd-Frank financial reform, consumer protection, the EPA, Planned Parenthood, the Affordable Care Act are top priorities as is their strong support for Right to Work laws.
The society’s core agenda has reshaped the landscape of the U.S. judiciary by promoting right-wing judicial activists/corporate lawyers into positions of power while proposing far-right legal theories to political officials and unqualified judges who turn that ideology into public policy. The society is accomplishing in the courts what Republicans haven’t achieved politically — yet.
U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, is a political official who has self-identified as a Federalist and aligned himself with this ideology. MI-01 deserves much better than this Trump yes man. John Hunter
