Supporting Negaunee school millage

To the Journal editor:

Historically, the citizens of Negaunee have always supported our school district. Our school system in Negaunee is one thing that sets us apart from other local communities.

I am writing to urge the voters of Negaunee’s district to vote yes on Tuesday to a millage request of 2.5 mills to create a sinking fund. The legalese of the millage states that it’s a new millage, but this is hardly the case.

The Michigan Legislature recently amended the Revised School Code to permit school districts to use sinking fund revenues for additional improvements for security and instructional technology. In order for school districts to benefit from this change in law, its voters must authorize the school district to create a “new” sinking fund.

Past sinking fund requests have always been approved, and our district has done some amazing things with the revenue generated from this fund. It has been used to repair/replace roofs on all the schools, repair/replace the heating systems, and replace doors and windows to name just a few projects.

Today’s world requires a different level of thinking with district funds. Technology and safety are primary concerns of a school board. The new language adopted by our Legislature allows for more flexibility in the use of these funds. If approved, these funds will be used to upgrade security at our district’s buildings helping to keep our kids and property safe. It’ll also be used to upgrade instructional technology, so our teachers have the best methods available to educate Negaunee’s future.

As a recap, I’d like for you to understand that while the language of the upcoming millage on Tuesday will look like Negaunee Public Schools is looking for a new millage, in reality it’s a millage that we’ve all approved before.

Please vote yes to keep Negaunee’s future looking bright.
