People going to dogs?

To the Journal editor:

On March 15, I listened to a CBS network story about a wonderful program which brings dogs from Turkey to loving adoptive parents in the U.S.

The reporter and adoptive parents gushed about what a great thing it was to rescue these dogs from the difficult circumstances of their lives in Istanbul.

The families paid thousands of dollars for each dog they adopted.

At the risk of offending all you pet lovers out there — that story did not feel good to me! What about the people who live in difficult circumstances? Why do we ban refugees and welcome dogs? Why do we raise money for new animal shelters while communities go without homeless shelters? Why are we willing to spend $62.75 billion each year in the U.S. on supplies, services and gifts for our pets, (American Pet Product Association, 2016 estimate) while people go without services they need?

Perhaps we need a SPCP — Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to People. Count me in!
