Miners championship team saluted

To the Journal editor:

The day was 60 years in the making, and the celebration was worth the wait.

On Friday, Feb. 10, the 1957 Negaunee HS boys basketball team, and cheerleaders, were recognized by the community and school district as they came together to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their incredible championship run.

A huge thank you to Roland “Foo” Koski for all his work to make this event a reality, as well as, all the volunteers required to pull off a day long event.

As a participant in all events, I saw first hand how each and every moment impacted the players as they reunited. Good laughs, good memories and a few tears.

The day included an assembly at the high school, a community dinner, a proclamation by the mayor and recoognition ceremony prior to the boys basketball game against Ishpeming.

How fitting, since the 1957 team played their last game at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium against Ishpeming, that they would be honored prior to the 2017 team taking the court against our neighbors to the west.

When the VIPs were introduced everyone, including the classy folks from Ishpeming, were on their feet.

Again, thank you to all involved in making this such a special day. A good reminder of why I feel so blessed and proud to live in the U.P.
