Letter to editor missed mark

To the Journal editor:

I would like to address the issue of “common sense rules are lacking” raised by Robert Anderson’s Letter to the Editor in the Jan. 11 edition of The Mining Journal.

The first step in getting common sense is to stay calm and act with intelligence and facts versus emotion and inaccurate information. Mr. Anderson’s letter had several glaring errors. The firearm used in the Fort Lauderdale crime was not an automatic handgun/gun/weapon.

Also, the baggage check-in and claim areas have never been part of the secured areas of an airport. And there are laws in place that prohibit carrying guns on airplanes.

Mr. Anderson further states, “… the U.S. … has the highest rate of gun-related murders.” A quick search of the internet, searching for firearm related homicide rates, has the USA as 18th in the world with 3.43 per 100,000 citizens. Not good, but not the “highest.”

And his claim of “… the NRA opposes even common sense gun safety legislation” is the most inaccurate of all of his claims. The National Rifle Association is one of the most dedicated organizations supporting gun safety. I challenge anyone to find one piece of common sense gun safety legislation that the NRA has opposed.

Here’s to common sense, accurate facts and intelligent action.
