Can’t get break

To the Journal editor:

Well folks, they have done it to us again, haven’t they? It was only a few short years ago it seemed that everyone in government was crying that there was a shortage of oil and thus a shortage of gasoline.

This being the case they insisted that to cut gas consumption and lower emission gases car companies must produce more efficient cars.

Then, they turned to the public and asked that we go the extra expense when buying a car and get an electric-powered car or at least a hybrid. We had to do something to cut gas consumption!

Now, those same government offices that ask us to cut consumption of gasoline are crying because we aren’t buying enough gas to generate enough gas tax to keep our roads in good repair.

And, if you were one of the good citizens who went the extra dollars and bought an electric or hybrid car they are going to reward you by taxing you $100 per-year extra for your electric car and making you pay $35 in gas tax before you ever put a gallon of gas in your car.

If you didn’t go all the way to an electric car, but only bought a hybrid you will only be penalized an extra $30 when you register your car each year plus an extra $17 in gas tax for gas that you never get to put in your car.

Doesn’t stuff like this really build your trust in government?
