Electorial College doing its job
To the Journal editor:
Here’s a new take on the current barrage of media against the Electoral College — thank God it’s there!
Most people don’t understand the history and reasoning behind setting up the Electoral College. I’m amazed at the wisdom of the founding fathers to have the foresight of establishing it.
The Electoral College helps prevent the views of the heavily populated states (like California and New York) from controlling our national elections.
These two states don’t necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the rest of the country but their populations could decide the entire country’s future.
As an example, several years ago Michigan had a vote on allowing a hunting season on wolves. The folks downstate have no idea of the need to control this predator; they see beautiful pictures of a wolf doing nothing more than howling at the moon.
They can’t conceive the loss of a cow to a farmer or the loss of a beloved pet or the anxiety of just walking in the woods and confronting an animal who has no fear of man.
Based on the 2010 census, the population of just Oakland County downstate is 1.2 million; the population of the entire Upper Peninsula is 116, 548. The measure lost based on “popular vote.”
I’m grateful for the Electoral College to allow all states a say in our national elections. My prayer now is the country will stop dwelling in the past and give our new President a change — let’s bring back the united in United States.
