Letters to the Editor

Give Trump credit

To the Journal editor:

I always find contradictions in letters written by liberals. To them, it is justice to seek rule changes when they lose. Not just in elections, but in just about everything. Al Gore loses in 2000 so they go to court. Hillary loses in 2016 so they want multiple recounts.

With heads inveterately in the sand many predictably blame their loss on the FBI, Wikileaks, Russian hackers, or something truly non-existent such as Republican cheating. Now it is the electoral college that we must blame.

A recent letter states that since D.C went 93 percent Democrat it makes good sense that Hillary wins all the electoral votes there, but in Michigan it makes no sense. If it makes no sense in Michigan, then it shouldn’t make sense for Hillary to get all the electors in California, Oregon, or New York.

Mr. Trump knew the rules before he started and he also knew he was running against someone who had been campaigning for years with a strong media-supported organization.

If he spoke in California, he certainly would have enhanced his chances there. But, he was wise enough to know he ultimately would fall short, Hillary would get those 55 votes and the wasted time would dilute his chances elsewhere.

He had a far better message and he focused on where his opportunities were. If the rules were different, he would have campaigned differently.

Now, why is it not a good idea elect presidents by popular vote? First, it would be much easier to buy elections?

Going to big cities and promising free college and health care is a good way to start that. Folks in Iowa and South Dakota would never see a Presidential candidate and they could forget representation in Washington.

Never underestimate what our forefathers were aware of when the constitution was formed. These folks were well schooled. Without their wisdom, we would have 22 senators from California and only two from Utah.

That wouldn’t work too well, would it?
