Ball dropped on pair of county roadways

To the Journal editor:

I’m writing to express by outrage at the condition of Marquette County Roads 601 and 478 on Thanksgiving Day.

As I traveled from South Republic to my brother’s house on County Road 478, the roads went from bad to worse. M-95 was clear. The streets in Republic were snow covered but navigable. When I turned onto County Road 601, I found that not only had it not been plowed, but someone had sanded without even using the grader on the sander.

The road was treacherous.

Then when I1 got to County Road 478, I found that it had been neither sanded nor plowed. I will be surprised if no one slid off the road before morning.

I think this neglect and disregard for public safety is outrageous. I realize that the county road crews would rather not work on a holiday, but safety is their job.

Surely money saved by the late snowfall and drop in gasoline prices would have provided funds to pay for this service.

Marquette County Road Commission: It is your responsibility to keep our roads safe. The snow had stopped falling well before my 2 p.m. travel. What excuse can there be for this situation?
