Kudos to Miners

To the Journal editor:

Congratulation to the fine season the Negaunee Miners achieved this year with a 24-2 record ending with the semi-final loss to Detroit Consortium who eventually won it all.

Their first loss was to the Marquette Redmen who they played without Eric Lori who in my book was one of the better guards in the Upper Peninsula. I think the outcome would have been different with his services.

Coach Mike O’Donnell had these players for 4 years and they sure brought excitement to the Marquette county area basketball fans. The Miners started out good and seemed to gel and get better as the season progressed. Loy, Windahl and Radloff got better as the season winded down.

The younger Lori was a big surprise who proved he could play against anyone. His rebounding was unbelievable day in and day out. This was evident against Josh Jackson (Detroit Consortium) and the other big horses on their team. It will be a treat to see him back next year.

Then we have Batman and Robin (Tyler Jandron and Eric Lori). The accolades just kept mounting as the year progressed. These two displayed talents in speed, defense and passing abilities that haven’t been seen in sometime. When one had a slight subpar game, you could count on the other to pick up the pace. When they were both on, it was such a joy to watch them and the opponents dreaded this scenario.

Tyler Jandron to me is the best player to ever wear a uniform for the Miners since the Lakeview gym was opened. This is just my opinion. His speed, shooting, court awareness, rebounding and his untiring defense drove most opponents nuts. His position on the all-state team was a lock in.

Tyler off the court has always been a polite and down to earth young man who one cannot help but liking. His bother Tony was something else so it is fitting that someone a notch above Tony happens to be his brother.

I must add, Eric Lori equaled Noah Bacchus at the quarter finals who also made all-state but weird things come into play on these selections that one can’t explain.

And the reserves were there each and every night to help mold this team into what it is.

I would like to say to the seniors, good luck in all you pursue in the future and to the underclassmen, keep hitting the outside courts and you will put a smile on coach O’Donnell’s face next fall.
