Our unsung heroes

To the Journal editor:

The Bible charges us all with a responsibility to help those we find in need. Until just recently, I had no idea how seriously a local program, Room at the Inn, takes this challenge.

Last week, we met with members of Room at the Inn, at their new location, to make a small donation to their program.

Prior to this, I had heard they were in partnership with several churches to provide a place for the homeless to sleep during the winter months.

I did not know, however, that they also have rented a place to use as a warming center for the homeless to get out of these blistering cold temps during the day, they offer breakfast to the same, and when necessary, they coordinate transportation for their guests to the sponsoring church of the evening.

During our meeting, I learned that Room at the Inn just recently purchased a building on West Washington Street to carry on this mission. The building is in poor shape.

They are in the early stages of getting inspections and requesting permits for the renovations needed to make the building more serviceable to their guests. Once completed, the center will be operational from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will offer the homeless a warming center, handicapped accessible showers and limited laundry facilities.

I know of many charitable agencies in our community that were created to offer assistance to the needy in our midst, but this is a group of people organized to provide the most fundamental needs of the homeless in our community.

This is truly where the rubber meets the road when it comes to caring for those in need.
