Helmet Head Project a positive, worthwhile venture

We are all aware of the serious injuries that can result from a fall on the slopes when skiing or snowboarding, and we can also appreciate the protection one receives by wearing a helmet.

That’s why we’d like to thank organizers and sponsors of Sunday’s Helmet Head Project, which was held at Marquette Mountain.

One-hundred and fifty children ages 17 and younger benefited from the Helmet Head Project Sunday by receiving free fitted helmets and goggles they can use when skiing or snowboarding. The event was hosted and sponsored by Marquette Mountain, Marquette Mountain Ski Patrol, Northern Michigan University Ski & Snowboard Club, NMU athletic trainers, Upper Peninsula Health Plan, UP Health System and Eagle Mine.

At the event, youngsters got to learn about why it’s important to wear a helmet and practice safety first out on the slopes.

While the research may be mixed on exactly how much helmets truly protect people from serious head injuries, common sense will tell you it’s probably better to wear one than not, because in some situations even a little protection might be the difference between life and death.

As that white fluffy stuff continues to swirl around outside, ski season is just about starting up, and these businesses and organizations partnered together to help keep our children safe out there on the hill. For that, we’re grateful and glad that we have one more example of yet another group of community partners coming together to support our youth.
