Love INC marking one year of helping needy in region

The idea is that by working together, local churches can do more to help the needy.

Love INC of the Upper Peninsula tonight celebrates one year of doing just that.

Love INC connects area churches to residents in need. It is seeking the community’s help to continue the work of providing a hub that connects people who need assistance and volunteers who want to provide that help.

Love INC is having its first Year–End Celebration and Fundraiser at the Wesley United Methodist Church at 6 p.m. today. It will be an evening of live music, hors d’oeuvres and desserts along with a silent auction of more than 100 items donated by local businesses, artisans and crafters.

For those unfamiliar, the local Love INC organization is affiliated with a national organization of the same name. Locally, 15 churches from throughout Marquette County work together to efficiently use resources already available to help those in need.

“We are the connector for the churches. We don’t actually have a pot of money that we are paying rent, or electric bills for clients,” said Fiona Banfield, local Love INC executive director. “Instead It is all about building relationships with the clients to the churches and the volunteers within the churches.”

The national website for the organization puts it this way: “Love INC believes in local churches working together to address needs in their community. This demonstrates a unity of purpose … not a unity of theology.”

Church members from across the county have put in hundreds of volunteer hours in the last nine months, Banfield said, in a wide range of ways.

We thank all those involved in this organization for working together to help the needy people in the community. We hope many people are able to attend tonight’s event. Tickets for the event are $10 and are available in advance at Uptown Gifts, Little Miss Sew and Sew, and the Box Car in Ishpeming, in Negaunee at Midtown Bakery, and at the Flying Moose in Marquette.
