Classic car show to serve a much larger purpose

Third Street in Marquette will be lined with some real hot rods this weekend as the first-ever “Classic Cars on Third Street” takes place this Saturday.

Organizers tell us the event has received a pretty positive response so far, and it is expected to draw people from across the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin out to the Village.

With a little help from the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, the show was created by Tammy and Bill Dupras in memory of the late Jessica Drummond.

Drummond, Tammy’s daughter, was killed nearly two years ago in a Thanksgiving tragedy. Police reports at the time indicated she, along with her best friend, Brodie Dagenais, and unborn child, were killed by Drummond’s boyfriend Charles Masterson, the father of the child she was carrying.

There’s more detail about the unfortunate incident in a story on the pages of today’s Journal, but one thing we’d like to reiterate here is that Drummond’s family wanted to turn the tragedy into something positive.

There are far too many tragedies occurring in today’s world, which is all the more reason to show our support for the positive efforts out there.

Classic Cars on Third Street will benefit the Women’s Center and Harbor House, which serves survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Marquette and Alger counties.

The event is free, but there will be other ways to contribute, such as a 50-50 raffle and through purchasing merchandise that will be sold.

The show will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday on Third Street between Hewitt Avenue and Park Street, and we encourage everyone — car enthusiasts or not — to head over there and show their support.

When tragedies — such as the one that happened nearly two years ago — occur in a community like ours, that’s when we need to rely on each other most, and this is a great opportunity to show your support. And you can check out some classic cars in the meantime.
