Fundraiser for science competition worthy of donation

From time to time over the years, The Mining Journal has used this space to call to our readers’ collective attention fundraising efforts we consider deserving. One such effort is currently ongoing at the Marquette Area Public Schools where students and organizers are involved in a state competition they hope will lead to a national one.

The competition is entitled “Solve for Tomorrow.” Sponsored by Samsung Corp., local school districts compete in projects designed to support future alternative energy sources. MAPS will likely focus on solar energy.

According to a recent Mining Journal story, MAPS grant writers penned a state-level winning grant in the competition, entitling MAPS to receive a $25,000 package of Samsung technology to support their efforts. The fundraising is a condition of the contest.

A web fundraising page has already been launched. Readers can find it at www.generosity.com/education-fundraising/building-steam-at-marquette-area-public-schools. So far, about $300 has been raised; the additional funding will help support materials for a MAPS Makerspace Solar Lab that the competition money doesn’t cover.

In February, 10 Michigan finalists will each receive $50,000 and advance to the national finals. From there, a trio of national winners will be awarded $150,000 each, among other prizes, including a $20,000 bonus,

We’d recommend readers check this project out and consider a donation. Energy independence is something that has not only economic ramifications but political and cultural ones, too. Having MAPS students involved in research toward that end is very positive.
