Annual Canathon a great way to give during holidays
Hunger knows no season, so we’re hoping as many people as are able take part in the TV6 Canathon this year.
The effort to collect food for local pantries launched Nov. 14 and concludes this coming Wednesday with a one-hour commercial-free program on WLUC-TV6.
The TV6 Canathon began in 1982. About 700 pounds were contributed to the effort that first year. Now, the drive sees more than 133,000 pounds of food donated annually along with more than $8,000 in monetary gifts to help restock pantry shelves at food banks through a 10-county area of the Upper Peninsula.
There are about 250 drop-off sites in these counties, making it easier than ever for everyone to take part. Plus, we are thrilled to know young people are taking part at more than 75 schools through the region. Teaching youngsters the joy of helping others is a worthy effort, indeed.
All food collected in a community stays in that community, according to a post on the TV6 website, meaning that those who take part truly “help feed a hungry neighbor.”
There’s still time to take part. We encourage those who haven’t already made a donation — either of food or money — to step up as they are able to boost this great project.
The thought of even one child going to bed hungry should be enough motivation to get everyone behind this awesome food drive.

If we know our U.P. neighbors — and their generous hearts — we believe this will be TV6’s most successful collection effort to date.
