Either ore, roads and rails

To the Journal editor:

The Eagle Mine, and perhaps more in the future, are here for a long time, apparently. With the discovery of more ore on the Yellow Dog Plains, the present road route to carry the ore to the mill in Republic, is shortsighted and was not well permitted in the first place (no EIS).

Will there be 20 years of ore trucks on Marquette County Road 550, Wright Street and U.S. 41? Already the damage is accumulating and there have been a couple wrecks, closing down County Road 550.

Why not do the sane thing and build a rail system, from the mine to the mill? This would be less problematic to the environment. Get the ore out faster, cheaper in the long run, without running huge ore trucks, congesting and already ruining public roadways.

Then, when the ore body is exhausted, turn the rail into a dining car/hiking/biking tourist transport into the wilderness so that future generations can enjoy recreation.

Apparently, the mining operations are here to stay. Transport the ore in a better way, so they can get in and get out, faster, safer.
