Andrew W. ‘Andy’ Lempesis

Andrew Lempesis

MARQUETTE, MI – Andrew W. “Andy” Lempesis, 89, of Marquette, entered eternal life Monday morning, January 21, 2019 at U.P. Health System-Marquette. He had been in ill health over the past two years.

Andy was born on July 1, 1929 in Marquette, a son of the late William and Eugenia Lempesis. He was a 1949 graduate of Graveraet High School. After graduation, he proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

On July 16, 1960, Andy married the former Marilyn Luoma at the Greek Church of the Assumption in Marquette. Together Andy and Marilyn raised four children while Andy was also a busy entrepreneur, owning and operating the popular establishment Andy’s Bar in downtown Marquette for many years. After selling the bar, Andy worked at Marquette General Hospital several years in their maintenance department. He also managed the building for Marquette Elks Lodge #405.

In his free time, Andy was an avid golfer and an even better bowler, belonging to several bowling leagues over the years. He could be found cheering on his beloved Green Bay Packers on Sundays in the fall. He also loved to laugh and make others laugh, as he was a terrific storyteller. And you cannot leave out his love of beer.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, as well as an active member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Marilyn Lempesis; four children, William “Bill” (Leah) Lempesis of Appleton, WI, Georgia Lempesis of Marquette, Nikki (Brian) Gingras of Appleton, WI, and Christopher (Rachel) Lempesis of Milwaukee, WI; seven grandchildren, Desiree and Jonah Lempesis, Andy Lempesis-Bullard, Emma and Sam Gingras, and twins, Nicklas and Vincent Lempesis; four siblings, Georgia Morrison, Toula Karditzas, Sophie Aulik, and Helen Balchan; also several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents was a brother, Constantine Lempesis.

The Lempesis family would like to thank the staff at the D.J. Jacobetti Home For Vets for the wonderful care Andy received over the final two-plus years of his life as a resident there.

The Lempesis family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, January 26th beginning at 12 Noon in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home until the time of the service at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Daniel Ondov of Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Spring burial with military honors will take place in the Park Cemetery.
