MICHIGAMME TWP, MI – Phyllis Lorraine Gardner, age 90 passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at home while in the loving care of her family and UP Home Health and Hospice.

Phyllis was born February 15, 1928 in Hibbing, MN to William and Olga (Alfredson) Erickson. She grew up in the small mining community of Poole Location, near Hibbing. It was truly a pool of immigrant families and judging from her stories it was a great place to grow up.

Following graduation from Hibbing High School in 1946, she was recruited by the federal government to work for the Treasury Department in Washington D.C. After returning to Minnesota she worked for the Euclid Road Machinery Company in Hibbing, where she met her husband Jesse Gardner.

Lorraine and her family moved to Ishpeming in 1963. While living in Ishpeming and Michigamme she was active in teaching Bishop sewing and the Michigamme Museum. She also served as deputy clerk for Michigamme Township for many years. Lorraine enjoyed gardening, snowmobiling, skiing, and boating on Lake Michigamme.

Lorraine is survived by 3 children: Jacquelyne Gardner (Ned Cox) of Bennington, VT, Neil Gardner of Side Lake, MN and Charlie (Roxane) Gardner of Michigamme, 3 grandchildren: Jenevieve Cameron, Damon Gardner, Derek Gardner, 2 great grandchildren: Khavren and Noel Gardner, 2 nieces and a nephew.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jesse Gardner in 1991, brother Norman Erickson, and daughter in law Dianne (Staffaroni) Gardner.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Michigamme Community Building. Please join the family for food and fellowship during that time.

Inurnment will take place in the spring at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, Minnesota.

The family would like to thank UP Home Health and Hospice, Dr. Wayne B. Carlson and Dr. Sheetal Acharya and all of those who have shown their kindness to Lorraine and her family.
