Carl Robert Berglund

Carl Robert Berglund

BROOKLYN PARK, MN — A life well lived was cut short on Saturday morning, October 27, 2018, when Carl peacefully passed away surrounded by family at J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice, in Brooklyn Park, MN.

Originally from Marquette, Michigan, Carl was born on August 19, 1981 to Robert and Lucinda (Harris) Berglund. Growing up on Marquette’s East Side, Carl attended Marquette Co-op Preschool, Parkview Elementary School and Graveraet Middle School, and played for many years with Marquette Junior Hockey, when he was not on his way to Round Lake Camp with his dad, and beloved dog, Sammy.

Upon moving to Two Harbors, MN in 1996, Carl attended The Marshall School in Duluth, graduating with the Class of 2000. His studies then continued at the University of Minnesota at Morris, concluding at UM-Duluth with a B.A. in History. Prior to his battle with cancer, Carl resided in Duluth and worked at Pinewood, a non-profit that taught life skills and provided a safe daytime place for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Five years ago, Carl relocated to New Hope, MN to be close to the excellent medical treatment of the University of Minnesota, and his sister, Katie, after his initial diagnosis. In September, Carl’s cancer prognosis changed for the worse as his tumors became aggressive, and his quality of life deteriorated. Through his journey, Carl remained steadfast and willing to fight. Ten days before he passed, Carl was eating dinner out with his parents, unaware that soon he would be called home.

Along his earthly journey, Carl cultivated and maintained lifelong frien- dships that he valued to the end. Carl never lost sight of his Upper Michigan roots, spending as much time as he could at our family Beach Shack on Lake Michigan. He was a voracious reader, and from an early age, Carl’s sense of humor was a gift that he thoughtfully shared with those he loved.

Carl is survived by his parents, Robert and Lucinda Berglund; sisters Leah (Jeffrey) Berglund- Halvorson, and Katie (Todd) Decker; former spouse, Melissa (Strey) Berglund; as well as nieces and nephews: Natalie, Henry, and Anna Halvorson; and Jamese and Sammuel Decker; devoted girlfriend, Megan McLennan; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 3rd at Valley Community Church, Golden Valley, MN, with visitation at 10am, and services at 11am. A luncheon will follow.
