Michael J. ‘Mick’ Smith

MARQUETTE, MI – Michael J. “Mick” Smith, age 71, of Marquette, died Friday, May 4, 2018 at home.

Born July 8, 1946, in Marquette, a son of George and Jenny Smith, Mick was raised in Marquette and was a member of the Graveraet High School Class of 1964, the last class to graduate from Graveraet before the high school moved to new facilities. For over 43 years, Mike was employed with the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad as a machinist.

Good-naturedly known as “Father Smith”, Mick, even as a younger man, was known to be a listening ear to anyone with a problem or woe. He was an avid collector, amassing a collection of over 1500 Beanie Babies, numerous Match Box cars, and had an impressive Christmas village display that was the envy of many. Mick also prided himself on being thrifty and was the ultimate clearance shopper and coupon clipper. He often purchased clearance plants from local retail stores and Penny brought those plants to life. Such a savings! If it wasn’t “on sale” it wasn’t for sale”.

A loving husband, dad, and proud grandfather, Mick is survived by his wife of 48 years, Penny (Dupras) Smith; a daughter, Angela (Joshua) Irwin of Middleville; a son, Shawn (Kimberly) Smith of White Cloud; his grandchildren, Macy Irwin, Amanda Smith, and Tyler Smith; a sister, Joyce Koval; several nieces and nephews; and his youngest canine grandchild, Peaches.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ray Smith; and his brother-in-law, Leo Koval.

No public services will be held.
