David M. Bennett, Sr.

NEGAUNEE, MI. – David McAlpine Bennett, Sr., 91, of Negaunee, passed away peacefully Thursday night, December 14, 2017 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee.

David was born July 24, 1926 in Marquette to Dr. Arthur K. and Margaret (Collin) Bennett, and graduated from St. John’s Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin in 1944. Following graduation he served in the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged. Following his service to his country, he graduated from Michigan Technological University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology. He worked for various local mines, retiring from Cleveland Cliffs in the early 1980’s. He then spent over 30 years in Costa Rica engaged in non-ferrous mineral exploration.

Mr. Bennett was a believer in the Christian faith, and maintained his belief in Jesus Christ. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, being in the woods, working on old cars, history and science and being busy. He also loved time spent at his camp on Conway Lake.

Surviving are 2 sons, David (Lexine) Bennett, Jr. of Negaunee and Robert (Beverly) Bennett of Marquette; 2 daughters, Ruth Poutanen of McFarland, WI and Becky (Ted) Clemens of Sachse, Texas; former son-in-law, Jerry Poutanen of Negaunee; 12 grandchildren: Jeffrey Poutanen, Theresa (Mike) D’Ambrose, Maryellen (Jason) Charbonneau, Rachael (Dan) Viitala, Benjamin (Krissi), Adelaide (Kevin Cooke) and Peter Clemens, David (Heather Bittner)and Scott Bennett, Marjorie (Peter) Marshall, Christina Bennett and Robert (Julie) Bennett; 4 step-grandchildren: Peter, Alexis, Christopher and Brandon Holman; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Theresa Bennett on June 6, 2014; a sister, Ruth Oates; and 3 brothers: Arthur, Matthew and George Bennett.

Honoring David’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

David’s family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful and caring staff of the Eastwood Nursing Center for their compassionate care.
