Robert G. Aikala
MARQUETTE, MI – Robert George “Bob” Aikala, age 84, of Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday morning, November 25, 2017, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, in the loving care of his family.
Born September 25, 1933, in Ironwood, a son of George and Lempi (Santti) Aikala, Bob was raised in Ironwood, graduating from Luther L. Wright High School, Class of 1951. He attended Gogebic Community College for two years and then transferred to Northern Michigan University, graduating in 1955 with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting. On October 6, 1955, Bob entered the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge on July 12, 1957, he moved to Minneapolis where he met and later married, Ceil Ehlers, on October 10, 1959. The couple made their first home in Minneapolis and had their firstborn child, Craig, and then relocated to Le Sueur, Minnesota where Steven was born. Bob accepted a position at Northern Michigan University as Director of the Computer Center in 1963, and it was in Marquette that son, Mark, was born. Bob was employed for 29 years at Northern, retiring in September 1992. In his leisure, Bob enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, reading, and became an avid golfer following retirement. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ceil of Marquette; sons, Craig Aikala of Maple Grove, MN, Steven (Johanna) Aikala of Woodstock, GA, and Mark (Krysten) Aikala of Shakopee, MN; his grandchildren, Michelle Aikala, Katherine Aikala, and Justin (Jessica) Aikala; great-grandchildren, Janessa and Jalynn Aikala; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Arnold “Aike” and sister-in-law, Lois Aikala; and his sister, Miriam and brother-in-law, Toivo “Toi” Thompson.
Memorial services will be held in the spring of 2018 and will be announced.
