Martha K. Tuimala
MARQUETTE, MI – Martha K. Tuimala, age 100, of Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday, November 25, 2017, at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Martha was born November 6, 1917, at the family home in Rumely, with the assistance of a midwife, a daughter of Emil and Ida (Ahomaki) Filpula. She developed a strong work ethic early in life and her first employment came at a young age with the Munising Restaurant. Later employments included working at Munising Wood Products in Marquette, and then at the Downtowner Motel and Marquette General Hospital.
She was a hard worker, knew tough times, and was conscientious enough to overcome. She had an especially close relationship with her sister, Lillian. They were not only sisters, but best friends, and enjoyed many happy times together going out to eat, visiting the mall, going out for ice cream, or simply taking a ride.
Martha loved animals and fed those that frequented her yard and liked to go out to friend’s camps during deer season to watch the deer. She treasured her friends and enjoyed meeting them at the mall for a cup of coffee. A talented cook, Martha liked to entertain family and friends at her table. Family was all important and she valued the time spent with them, especially flying to Florida and Tennessee to visit her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. They recently gathered to help her celebrate her milestone 100th birthday. She will be greatly missed by all.
A loving mother, grandparent, and sister, Martha is survived by her daughter, Darlene Jones; grandchildren, Cathy Tuimala, Vince Tuimala, Carrie Rose, Mike Tuimala, Connie Horton, Nicole Freeman, and Stefanie Jones; several great and great great-grandchildren; her sisters, Lillian Tuimala and Ellen Filpula; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Reino; son, Victor; and several sisters and a brother.
Private family services will be held at the Fassbender Funeral Home. Interment will be made in the Northland Chapel Gardens. Pallbearers will be Jim Jones, Vince Tuimala, Ben Rose, Kurt Tuimala, Shawn Horton, and Seth Horton.
