Judith Lyn Place

MARQUETTE TWP, MI – Judith Lyn Place, age 77, entered eternal life Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at UP Health System – Marquette, in the loving care of her family.

Born November 7, 1940, in Detroit, a daughter of Isadore and Christina (Banks) Clark, Judy was raised in Cheboygan and graduated from Cheboygan High School. Following graduation in 1958, she enrolled at Central Michigan University obtaining a bachelors degree in Education. In 1973, she moved to Marquette and began working for the State of Michigan at the 4-H Extension Office, while also obtaining her Masters degree in Education from Northern Michigan University.

Judy later served as Executive Director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters- Marquette, before employment with Northern Michigan University as Director of the Public Service and Conference Department until her retirement. Her civic involvements included participation in the Marquette Chorale Society, UP Early Childhood Development, Marquette Beautification Committee, Marquette Garden Club, Finn Fest, and assisting with planning the annual Upper Peninsula Area Education Youth Conference.

In her leisure, Judy loved picking agates, gardening, and was a talented designer of floral arrangements. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, while also serving as the Board of Trustees Chairperson, Chairperson of His Garden Committee, and was a member of the Taking New Steps Capital Campaign.

Survivors include two sons, Art (Jody) Place of Fallon, NV and Greg (Lisa) Place of Marquette; three grandchildren, Collin, Brett and Julia Place all of Marquette; her sister, Donna Fletcher of Gainesville, TX; special niece, Dianne (Ray) Green of Gainesville, TX; and close friends, Cindy Larson and Laurel Perko or Marquette.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call at Bethel Baptist Church on Wednesday, November 29, beginning at 10:30 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. Dr. Brian Oberg and Hank Steede, pastors, will officiate. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be made in the Park Cemetery.
