Mary Ellen Grimsby
MARQUETTE, MI – Mary Ellen Grimsby, age 89, of Marquette, and former Skandia resident, entered eternal life Friday, October 6, 2017, at the Norlite Nursing Center, in the loving, comforting care of her family. She had resided at Norlite for the past eight years.
She was born February 3, 1928, in Marquette, a daughter of the late Herman and Elizabeth (Thoney) Keller, and was raised in Marquette. She worked as a waitress at the former Elite Shop and the Office and later as a clerk for LaVignes Variety Store. Mary Ellen was employed for several years as a salesclerk in the Men’s Wear and Housewares Departments of Montgomery Ward. On June 19, 1947 she married Albert A. Grimsby and the couple moved to the Skandia area in 1953 where they raised their family. In 1964 Mary Ellen began a 35 year employment with the Ben Franklin Store, retiring in June of 1999.
She played on the Harvey Inn Cribbage Team from 1967-1989, serving as captain of that team from 1972-1989. She had also served as secretary-treasurer for the Lady Trainman Auxillary since 1967. Mary Ellen enjoyed craftwork, flower and vegetable gardening.
Survivors include three daughters, Lynn Meske of Skandia, Lorraine (Butch) Roe of Burr Ridge, IL, and Kymm (Robert) Recht of Desplaines, IL; two sons, Larry Grimsby of Ironwood and Charles Grimsby of Green Bay, WI; a step-son, Frank Grimsby of Trenary; seven grandsons, Ross (Joelle) Olsen, Shawn (Tina) Gutzman, Eugene (Jessica) Roeder, Joe (Debra) Grimsby, Tim (Stephanie) Grimsby, Jim (Gwen) Grimsby, and Brandon Recht; three granddaughters, Leslie (John) LeMieux, Lisa Grimsby, and Alexandra Recht; seven great-grandsons, Ross Olsen, Jr., Shawn E. Gutzman II, Brayden, Bryce Roeder, Lincoln LeMieux, Jackson LeMieux, Michael Wiita; five great-granddaughters, Ellie Lynn Olsen, Angeline Wiita, Madelyn Wiita, Brylee and Bria Roeder; several step-grand-children; a brother, Gerald (Margaret) Keller of Marquette; numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert A. Grimsby on October 16, 1966; her son, Joseph Grimsby in July 1985; by an infant granddaughter, Jennifer Grimsby in 1972; a son-in-law, James Meske; her sister, Irene Keller; and a brother, Richard Keller.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 10, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. Rev. Greg Heikkala will officiate.
Interment will be made in the West Branch Township Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cancer Care of Marquette County.
