JULIA POWERS

MARQUETTE, MI – Julia Sophia Powers, age 101, passed away peacefully at the Norlite Nursing Center on October 10, 2017.

Julia was born on November 14, 1915 in Bisbee, AZ, a daughter of Finnish immigrants Henry and Senia (Huhtala) Lampi. Her family moved to Kiva, MI in 1917 and to Marquette in 1925. Julia was a 1933 graduate of Graveraet High School. She was employed as a telephone operator with Michigan Bell from 1933 thru 1946. In 1941, Julia married John (Jack) Powers of Marquette.

Julia was very proud of her Finnish heritage. She enjoyed speaking Finnish with her many friends and especially with her sister Vieno Maves. She was a gentle and loving person who had a kind word for everyone she encountered. Julia was an accomplished seamstress and an excellent baker. She enjoyed baking pies, cakes, and cookies for many family occasions. Julia loved animals of all kinds but had a special love of cats. She collected cat figurines as well as other cat related items.

Julia is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Susan (Pearce) Powers of Arlington, TX; grandson Christopher (Kari) Powers of Arlington, TX; granddaughter Andrea (Paul) Reid of Dalworthington Gardens, TX; five greatgrandchildren Senia and Mallorie Powers and Taylor and Connor Nelson all of Arlington, TX, and Cameron Reid of Dalworthington Gardens, TX. She is also survived by nieces; Julia Liubakka of Marquette, Bonnie (Richard) Reedy of Sterling, VA, and Colleen LaRue of Marquette.

In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death by her husband, John Powers, her sister and brother-in-law, Vieno and Herbert Maves, and sister-in-law, Rita Nichols.

Julia’s family wishes to thank the staff at Norlite for the loving and compassionate care they provided to her.

In accordance with Julia’s wishes, there will be no public services. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorials may be directed to UPAWS, Marquette.
