Gerald L. “Jerry” Beerman, Jr.

BIG BAY, MI – Gerald Lester “Jerry” Beerman, Jr., age 72, of Big Bay, passed away Tuesday morning, October 3, 2017, at his home, in the loving, comforting care of his family and UP Home Health and Hospice, following a long period of declining health.

Jerry was born in Bakersfield, California, on June 15, 1945, to the late Jay and Charlene (Abbott) Beerman. They relocated to Big Bay the very next day! Jerry attended Powell Township School until the 8th grade when he then decided to move to Omaha to find work. He was employed at the Campbell Soup factory with Uncle Max for a few years, until he woke up one morning, decided it was time, taking only his clothes, hopped in the Chev and came home. Upon returning, Jerry was drafted into the Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam Era as a tanker driver. He was honorably discharged and returned home to “the Bay”. Jerry met Paulette Dupras and they married in 1971 and began raising their family in Hungry Hollow. They eventually built their dream house on the “Hill”ù in 1979. Pops was an entrepreneur, a “visionary”, if you will, and tried his hand at several occupations. He and Paulette successfully bred and raised St. Bernards for several years. He worked as a carpenter, a logger, and owned Beerman’s Standard Service and Big Bay Game Room for three years, and later earned his GED. He was employed as a maintenance foreman at the Presque Isle Power Plant, retiring after 28 years of service. Jerry really enjoyed food and drinks with family and friends, whether it was on his pontoon where he’d often ask, “I wonder what the poor people are doing? or at his camp “Whiskey Island” which was his lifelong dream. In his earlier years, he enjoyed four-wheeling, watching boxing, ice fishing, deer hunting at camp with his boys, and helping the Lumberjack and Hotel pay the light bills (!). Pops was a loving father, devoted husband of 26 years, a compassionate listener, and, quite often, a sage teller of advice.

Jerry is survived by his four children, Mark (Amanda) Beerman, Tonya (Dan Pelto) Beerman, Erika Beerman, and Gerald Lester Beerman III all of Big Bay; his grandchildren, Joseph, Annie, and Elizabeth Beerman, Kyle Beaudry, and his little “sweetheart” Harlyn Beerman; also many cousins; uncles Tom and Danny; and aunt Joanne; and a brother, Bobby (Carol) Pointer.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife of 26 years, Paulette; several aunts and uncles; and good friend, Jitney.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Friday, October 6, beginning at 12:00 noon until the time of service at 2:00 pm Friday afternoon. CLP Darryl Small will officiate. Graveside services with veteran’s honors will follow at the Powell Township Cemetery, Big Bay, at 4:00 pm Friday afternoon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family at 8813 County Road 550, Marquette, MI 49855.
