Frank B. Garczynski


MARQUETTE, MI – Colonel Frank Bernard Garczynski Jr., age 85, entered eternal life Sunday, September 10th, 2017 beside his family. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Frank was born May 8th, 1932 in Bridgeport, MI, the son of Frank and Josephine Garczynski. He graduated from Saginaw High School in 1950. Following high school, Frank attended Central Michigan University for 3-years until he enlisted in the Air Force Aviation Program in 1953. Frank entered into pre-flight training in 1953 where he graduated with triple rating navigation certification and his navigator wings. He became a regular officer in the Air Force in 1954 and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 at Central Michigan University. Frank then volunteered for duty in the Strategic Air Command and was a member of one of the first crews to be certified in B-52H’s. He had 89 combat missions flying over Vietnam and 12,000 hours of flying time as a B-52 crew-member over Vietnam. After his tours in Vietnam, he returned home. In 1973 he became the squadron Commander of Munitions Maintenance at K.I. Sawyer Base in Gwinn, MI. His last assignment in the Air Force was in Offutt AFB, Omaha Nebraska, where he was promoted to Colonel and became the Deputy Director of Munitions for Strategic Air Command. He was awarded the following military citations: Bronze Star, Air Force Commendation Medal- 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Crew Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He retired in 1975. He was inducted into the Marquette Co. Aviation Wall of Honor at Sawyer Int’l Airport.

Frank had three main passions in his life: his love for serving his country, his love for fishing and most importantly to him the love of his family. He loved his family unconditionally and committedly. He always provided for his loved ones, offered words of encouragement and was always quick to offer a listening ear and a consoling hug. He cherished his days the most when spent with family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Josephine Garczynski and sister, Elaine Burch.

He is survived by his wife Alice Garczynski, daughters- Peggy (Todd) DeRosie and Mary (Cary) Ford, sons- Frank (Debi) Garczynski and David Garczynski, six grandchildren- Benjamin and John Ford, Stephanie Oatley, Frank (Meredith) Garczynski, Farah (Chris) Green and Jessica (Alex) Martin and four great-grandchildren, Trey, Zoe, Scarlett and Madison.

The family will receive friends at St. Louis the King Catholic Church, 265 Silver Creek Road, Marquette, Michigan Friday, September 15th, 2017 at 10:00 am. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am with burial in Sands Township cemetery at 1:30pm.
