James W. Rice
SCOTTSDALE, AZ. – James W. Rice, 96, passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2017, after a brief hospitalization in Scottsdale, AZ.
Jim was born June 30, 1921, to Vincent and Ida (Merrill) Rice in Marquette, Michigan. He was a 1939 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School.
Jim was united in marriage with Sylvia E. Luoma of Ishpeming May 24, 1941. He served his country during WW2 with the US Navy Seabees stationed on Attu in the Alleutian Islands as a heavy equipment operator.
Jim was employed with the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for 38 years, retiring as a maintenance supervisor from the Republic Mine in 1980.
He and Sylvia relocated to Tempe, AZ, in 1980 and enjoyed their new home for 6 years before her passing in 1986.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister Jane L. Rice, nephew Timothy C. Rice, and dear friend and companion Ann Fike.
Jim was fortunate to live a long and independent life and was proud of his sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his brother Daniel (Martha) Rice of Marquette, MI. Sons, James M. (Lois) Rice of Northville, MI, Larry (Diana) Benzel- Rice of Cave Creek, AZ and Patrick (Diane) Rice of Ishpeming, MI. Granddaughters Karen Rice (Gary) Faucett of Okemos, MI, Adrienne Rice of Milford, CT., and Kory Rice (Spencer) Peters of Cave Creek, AZ. Grandsons Jeffrey (Cristin) Rice of Chicago, IL, Joshua Rice of Phoenix, AZ and Aaron (Lauren) Rice of Naperville, IL. Great grandchildren Elizabeth Jenkins, Joshua Faucett, Charlotte Jenkins, Abigail Jenkins, Madeleine Jenkins, Jack RIce, Austin Peters, Henry Rice, and leo James Rice, Neice Tina Rice Gabell of Brandon, MS.
At his request, no public services will be held, and a family memorial will be held in the Upper Peninsula in the fall.
