David S. ‘Smiley’ Waananen

ISHPEMING TWP. MI. – David S. “Smiley” Waananen, age 53, of Sunnyside Estates passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at his home.

David was born September 1, 1963 the son of David J. and Marlene (Dodge) Waananen. He grew up in Calumet until age 14 when his family moved to Ishpeming, where “Smiley” had resided since. He was a graduate of the Westwood High School, Class of 1982 and attended the Skill Center at NMU receiving his certification in carpentry. David worked for various contractors locally as a carpenter throughout his working career. He enjoyed making furniture in his spare time but was most passionate about hunting which included rabbit, birds and especially deer.

Survivors include his parents David and Marlene Waananen of Ishpeming, 2 brothers – Kurt (Loretta) Waananen and Mark Waananen both of Ishpeming, nephew Jack Waananen, nieces Madison Waananen, Diana and Kali Black, great nephew Cooper LaPin and great niece Ava LaPin.

He was preceded in death by grandparents – Bernice and Ken Nelson, Eino Waananen, Mae and Bill Dower and an uncle Tom Nelson.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 until 11am on Saturday August 12, 2017 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with the Rev. Fr. Larry VanDamme to officiate.
