Barbara Gauthier

ISHPEMING, MI – Barbara Gauthier, age 81, of 408 Michigan St. Ishpeming, passed away on Monday July 31, 2017 at her home while in the loving care of her family and the U.P. Home Health and Hospice caregivers.

Barbara was born October 14, 1935 in Ishpeming to Reginald H. and Mary V. (Williams) Medlyn. Barb graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1953. She continued her education at Northern Michigan University, where she received her Bachelors degree in Business Education in 1971 and her Masters degree in Education in 1977.

Barbara was a high school business teacher in Ishpeming, where she was named Teacher of the Year in 1993. She was chosen to lead the school’s co-op vocational program when it was established in 1992 and served as the Shared-Time Vocational Director for 8 years for the 4 west-end school districts. She also served the Ishpeming School District as the Career Education Coordinator. Barb retired in 1997 after 25 years of teaching.

Barb was an active and devoted member of the Wesley United Methodist Church where she served in various capacities, including as the past president of United Methodist Women, as member of the finance and administrative committees, and as a devoted pasty worker. Barb was a former Bell Hospital Auxiliary member and a member of the retired teachers association.

She enjoyed nothing more than spending time at camp, swimming, reading, and spending time with her friends and family. Barb and her loving husband Ray wintered in Florida for 18 years, where she made many lifelong friendships. She also enjoyed playing cribbage and bridge as part of the Superiorland Bridge Club.

Barb had a strong faith, which never wavered, and valued her family above all else. Both were evident as she provided support to her family while her newborn great-grandson, Grayson Johnson, underwent a successful heart transplant in 2016.
