Margaret ‘Marge’ Shorkey

MARQUETTE, MI – Margaret “Marge” Shorkey, 94, of Marquette, died peacefully Sunday evening, July 16, 2017 with her loving family at her side, under the excellent care of the staff of Mill Creek Assisted Living and Lake Superior Hospice.

Marge was born on September 16, 1922 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Lee and Mary (Elliott) McGinley and was a lifelong Marquette resident. She was a 1940 graduate of John D. Pierce High School.

On April 24, 1943, Marge married George Shorkey at her parent’s home in Marquette and he preceded her in death on October 30, 2003.

Marge worked for many years in the office of Doctors J. Michael Coyne, Carl F. Eiben and George Wilson, retiring in 1985. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Marquette where she served as its treasurer, clerk, Sunday school teacher and Deaconess.

In her free time, Marge enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, reading, walking and line dancing.

Survivors include three daughters, Janice (Joel) Johnson Jarvi of Escanaba, Linda (Gary) Dallas of Marquette and Cynthia “Cyndi” Shorkey and her husband, Mike “Cooky” Cook of Marquette; a son-in-law, Lane (Kitty) Hooper of Marquette; 10 grandchildren, Jennie Martinson, Aimee Clubb, Don and Randy Johnson, Kim Theune, Bridgit Adams, Chett Hooper, Jennifer Kielas, Ben Dallas and Elizabeth Dallas Kehoe; 37 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren; one sister, Inez Christian of Marquette; also several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and her husband, George, was a daughter, Susan Hooper on June 16, 2004; a grandson, Lael Hooper and two brothers, Richard and Dennis McGinley.

The Shorkey family will greet relatives and friends on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home and also on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 728 W. Kaye Ave., Marquette.

A funeral service will take place in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor John Karvonen officiating. A luncheon will take place in the church social hall immediately after the graveside service at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Escorts will be Ben and Cedric Dallas, Don and Randy Johnson, Brendan Kielas and Chett Hooper.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church WMS Society, 728 W. Kaye Ave., Marquette, MI 49855 in Mrs. Shorkey’s memory.
