Thomas Lee Brugman

MARQUETTE, MI – Thomas Lee Brugman, 79, of Marquette passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility, in the loving presence of his family and the comforting care of UP Home Health and Hospice, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Tom was born November 19, 1937 in Marquette, Michigan, the son of Francis and Antoinette (Stanley) Brugman. He was raised in South Marquette. He had fond childhood memories of playing on Giant’s Foot. Tom graduated from Bishop Baraga High School in June of 1955. In September of that year, he entered the US Navy serving as a meteorologist with Fleet Weather Central of Guam. Upon honorable discharge from the service, Tom studied at Michigan State University.

Tom met his soulmate, Geraldine Clifton in Missouri. They fell in love over a chess game and he knew right away he would marry her. They married three months later on April 4,1964 at the Church of Our Lady in Festus, Missouri. Together the couple enjoyed golfing, traveling, gambling and the great outdoors.

Tom traveled extensively during his years of work as an Industrial Engineer. In his spare time he enjoyed history, reading by Lake Superior, crossword puzzles, playing on the Marquette Elks cribbage league, and was an excellent golfer.

He is survived by his son Matthew (Kathy) Brugman; granddaughters Kristin (Daniel) Fuhrmann of Wisconsin and Jenna (Rob) Parks of Minnesota; great grandchildren Kellan and Adrienne Fuhrmann, and Addison Parks. He is further survived by the extended family he was reunited with when he moved back home to Marquette in his final years; he was especially close to Shari Brugman and Dave Brugman and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Geri, and son Peter. At Tom’s request, no services will be planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the UP History Center or the Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund.
