TRENARY, MI – June Agnes Kiser Short, age 98, passed away quietly at her Trenary home on Thursday, December 22, 2016, under the loving care of her daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Dan Stegner, and of Lake Superior Hospice.

June, a long-time teacher in the Marquette/ Chocolay Township school system was born June 5, 1918, to Michael Gilbert Kiser and Sarah Ann (Sadie) Mills Kiser, the youngest of four daughters. She graduated at 16 from Trenary High School and proceeded to pursue the career that was her lifelong passion. She received her state teaching certificate from Northern Michigan College (later University) in 1942, her Bachelor’s degree in 1961, and graduated summa cum laude with her Master’s in 1966. June taught K-8 at Ralph, Michigan in 1942-43, then grades 2-6 at Rock and Trenary until 1952. From 1957-1987 she taught third grade at Beaver Grove and Silver Creek schools in Harvey. In 1951, June married Arthur Short, and had two children: Sherry Lynn and Michael William. June was active in the Trenary community even after she moved to Marquette following her marriage, then continued to be active in the Marquette Historical Society, the Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club, the PTA, and various local charities. She was a faithful member of both the Skandia and Trenary United Methodist Churches.

June was preceded in death by her parents, her three sisters: Kathleen (the late Carl) Holmquist, Anna (the late Jerry) Longtine, and Lola Kiser; by her husband, Arthur Short, and her infant son, Michael. Her niece, Thelma Holmquist (the late Bob) Carlson passed away March 23, 2017.

She is survived by her daughter Sherry (Dan) Stegner, nephews Eugene (Ruth) Holmquist, Keith (the late Dorothy) Holmquist, and Bruce (the late Mary) Holmquist, and many great-nephews and great-nieces, as well as countless beloved friends and former students.

June was a talented artist, writer, needleworker, gardener, and avid reader, who loved spending time with family and friends and was never too busy to lend a helping hand or a comforting hug. Her roguish sense of humor, kind heart, and mischievous twinkle helped lighten the loads of everyone who knew her.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Trenary United Methodist Church on Monday, June 5, beginning at 11:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 noon. Rev. Sandra Kolder will officiate. Interment will be made in the Mathias Township Cemetery, Trenary. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall.
