John Wendell Bird

MARQUETTE, MI – John Wendell Bird, age 91, of Marquette, entered eternal life on Friday, February 3, 2017, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had been living.

John was born September 3, 1925 in Lansing, MI, the son of the late John Wendell and Dorothy (Maywood) Bird. He was a graduate of Eaton Rapids High School class of 1943 and of Albion College class of 1950 and later attended Kent State University. John was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving from 1944 until 1946. He was employed by numerous companies including Bausch & Lomb Optical Company and Xerox Corporation both of Rochester, NY; Martin Aircraft in Middle River, MD; Detroit Arsenal, Centerline, MI; Boeing Company, Seattle, WA; Computing and Software, Inc., Holoman Air Force Base, NM; and retired from Northern Michigan University in 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, whom he married February 14, 1981; two daughters by a previous marriage, Lorelei Brodien of Littleton, NH and Lisa (Eugene) Ammerman of Camano Island, WA; his step-son, Robert (Judith) Krieg; two step-daughters, Sharon (Sonny) Koepp and Nancy (Neil) Carlson all of Marquette; four grandchildren, Daniel and Nathan Brodien and Desiree and Ryan Ammerman; his nephew, Chris Bird and his brother, Richard (Sue) Bird of Marquette.

He was preceded in death by his son, Russell Bird in 1979; his sister, Patricia Swanson.

Honoring John’s request a graveside service will be held in the spring in Northland Chapel Gardens Cemetery.
