Joan M. Ericson
NEGAUNEE, MI – Joan M. Ericson, 85, of 1221 Wenonah St., Negaunee died peacefully on Saturday, January 21, 2017, after a brief illness. She was surrounded by family at Brookridge Assisted Living and Memory Care in Marquette and under the care of U. P. Home Health and Hospice.
Joan was born in Marquette, MI, on November 8, 1931, to Harold and Celia (Peterson) Beckman. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1950. After graduation, Joan received her cosmetology license and worked as a cosmetologist until she married Kyle Ericson on December 27, 1958. After stops in Milwaukee, WI, and Iron Mountain, MI, she and Kyle moved their young family to Negaunee when Kyle took a job with Cliffs Natural Resources (CCI). Joan spent many years supporting her husband, raising her family and being involved in her church and community. She volunteered at the schools, hospitals, and nursing homes and was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Wawonowin Country Club and Chapter EJ, P.E.O. Joan was one of the first to volunteer and was always eager to help her family, friends and anyone else who needed help or support. Joan spent many years camping and enjoyed spending that time with family and friends. She was always in the middle of a book and if there was music playing she was tapping her feet or dancing. Most of all Joan loved spending time with her family. She was very proud of all of their accomplishments and supported her children and grandchildren in all of their activities.
In her later years, Joan spent her summers in Negaunee and her winters at Indian Creek Park in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Joan loved to be surrounded by friends and packed her days with activities and events. She enjoyed golfing and shuffleboard, singing in the choir at Indian Creek and her daily appointment at the pool. Joan had a competitive spirit and loved to play games. She was an accomplished bridge player and during the winters also enjoyed playing euchre, card bingo, pinochle, cribbage and Rummikub. Joan’s bright smile, positive attitude and love for all will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her son Kevin (Karen) Ericson of Hancock, and daughters Karin (Kevin) Stulz and Kimberly (Gary) Brunswick both of Marquette, 2 brothers Glenn and William Beckman both of Marquette, and a sister-in-law Roxie Beckman of Marquette. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Emily and Connor Stulz, Kaitlyn, Korey and Kenneth Ericson, Kyle J. Ericson and Celinda, Andrew and Isabella Brunswick.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Kyle, her parents Celia and Harold Beckman, her brothers Harold Beckman and Eugene Beckman and her son Kurt N. Ericson.
Joan’s family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming.
