GEORGE SMITH

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI – George A. Smith, age 89, of Ontario Avenue, Marquette Township, entered eternal life Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at his home.

Born October 24, 1927, in Marquette, a son of William E. and Angeline (Croschere) Smith, George was a lifelong Marquette area resident. He entered the US Navy in 1945 during World War II and served until 1946, being honorably discharged as a Seaman Second Class. Returning to Marquette, he was employed with Consolidated Fuel and Lumber for a time. On August 23, 1952, George married the former Jacqualine A. “Jake” Kalbfleisch, and they were married 57 years when she passed away. Although George and Jake had no children of their own, they were always interested in the activities of their many nieces and nephews. For many years, George was employed as a heavy equipment driver with the Marquette County Road Commission, driving large machinery in the summers and snowplows in the winter. He retired in 1989. In his spare time, George enjoyed hunting and fishing. One of George and Jake’s favorite past times was going for rides, often to Menominee where they ate at their favorite restaurant and then into Wisconsin to purchase lottery tickets.

George is survived by his sister, Etta Boehlo of Marquette; sisters-in-law, Doris Smith of Maryland and Verona Sherbinow of Marquette; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; his canine pal, Buster; and very special friend, Jerry Vashaw of Marquette.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jake in 2010; brothers, Kenneth, Harold (the late Rhea), Lee, Jack, and William E. (the late Judy) Smith, Jr; sisters, Pauline (the late Ed) Dauphinais, Joyce (the late Donald) Manninen, and Lois (the late Paul) DesJardins; and brother-in-law, Gustav Boehlo.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Brenda Velmer for her compassionate care of George.
