MARQUETTE, MI – Richard L. “Dick” Harbick, 86, of Marquette, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, December 3, 2016 at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living with his loving family at his side and under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Dick was born on March 31, 1930 in Shawano, Wisconsin, a son of the late Leonard and Della (LeMay) Harbick and was a 1948 graduate of Manistique High School and a 1957 graduate of Northern Michigan University.

Dick proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force as a cryptographic operator during the Korean Conflict in Okinawa, Japan.

Dick started his career with Montgomery Wards in 1958 in Marquette, later serving in other stores around the Midwest and eventually returned to this area where he managed the University Book Store at NMU. He retired from Northern on March 12, 1996 after 30 years of service with the university.

Dick was an avid skier and also was a proud ski instructor at Marquette Mountain until he was upwards of 80 years of age. He taught several generations of skiers over the years.

In his free time, Dick was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, walking on the beach. He enjoyed skiing with his family in Utah and Colorado as well as traveling overseas to ski in Austria and Switzerland.

Dick was formerly an active member of the Marquette Exchange Club and was involved in fundraising for the Peter White Public Library as well as NMU. He was a founder and first president of the Michigan College Bookstore Association, previously sat on the board of the National Association of College Stores and was an avid supporter and board member of the National Ski Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the former Mary Ann Hoffmann; two sons, Timothy (Rochelle) Harbick of Charlotte, NC and their daughters, Hannah (Jed) Wilkerson of Charlotte and Madeline Harbick of New York City; also a son, Mark (Jon Kastl) Harbick of New York City; a sister, Helen Joanne (Ronald) Peterson of Wetmore, MI. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death besides his parents were two brothers, Dan Harbick and Donald Harbick. A private family service will be held in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home with the Rev. Chad Ott of Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will take place in Winneconne Cemetery in Winneconne, Wisconsin.
