Wallace H. Dorie

MARQUETTE, MI – Wallace H. Dorie, 93, of Kenton, Michigan died peacefully, Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

He was born September 12, 1923 in Marquette, a son of the late Wilfred and Philomena (King) Dorie.

Wallace graduated from Graveraet High School in 1941. He worked for the Marquette Bakery until his induction in the US Army in 1943. He served in the South Pacific while in the Army Air Corps’ Aerial Recon Division until he was discharged in 1947.

Returning home, Wallace sailed on the Great Lakes ore boats from 1947 until 1953 when he then began his employment with the Michigan DNR. In 1955, he purchased the Shamrock Bar in Marquette and operated it until 1965. Wallace then worked as a union carpenter until his retirement in 1986. Following his retirement, Wallace moved to the Fre-Phil Camp in Kenton where he resided for many years until becoming a resident at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in 2012.

Wallace is survived by his sons, Douglas Dorie of Palmer, Brian Dorie of Ishpeming and Warren (Alice) Fuller of Lily, WI; daughters, Annette (Keith) Olander of Marquette, Kathy Katlan of California and Judy (John) Swajanen of Big Bay; a sister, Pauline Bogus of Centerline, MI; grandchildren, Jacob and Nichole Dorie, Malynda Taskila, Curt & Greg Swajanen, Craig and Cindy Wedman; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Eugene, Raymond, Edmond, Marie, Irene, Frances, Wilfred, Edward and Joice.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 3, 2016 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home, 526 N. Third St., Marquette, MI 49855. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Gregory Heikkala officiating. American Legion Post #44 will provide military honors. A luncheon will follow at the American Legion Post #44, 700 W. Bluff St., Marquette, MI 49855.
