Norman A. ‘Ike’ Barry

MARQUETTE, MI. – Norman A. “Ike” Barry, age 76, of Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday, October 1, 2016, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, in the loving care of his close friends.

Born November 22, 1939, in Marquette, a son of Norman and Irma (Anderson) Barry, Sr., Ike was raised in Marquette and graduated from Marquette High School in 1957. He was employed with a furniture company for a time before entering the US military in 1963, serving in the US Army until his honorable discharge in 1965. He relocated to Fairbanks, Alaska, where he was employed as a truck driver, joined the Teamster’s Union, and eventually became a foreman. Ike loved the rugged, tamed, and untamed portions of Alaska and spent 36 exciting years there. With a love of the great outdoors, he enjoyed hunting moose, caribou, whitetail, and small game, while also fishing salmon, trout, and halibut. He was an avid outdoorsman until he injured his back, accepted disability status, and fully retired from work. He returned to the Marquette area in 2001. During his younger years, Ike played the drums, and was considered quite the ladies’ man, taking dance lessons after someone told him, “Norman, if you want to get the ladies you have to learn to dance.” And, dance he did, until his knee gave out a few years ago. Ike enjoyed occasional cocktails at his local watering holes, Third Base and American Legion, and made it a point to occasionally buy a drink for all the women in the place. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and always made it a point to visit his friends at halftime in full Green Bay Packer attire, strutting his stuff, especially when they were winning. Throughout the years, Ike was a member of the Teamster’s Union, past member of the Moose, currently a member of the NRA and Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion.

Ike is survived by only a few relatives, niece, nephew, and cousin, and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant daughter, Kimberly Ann.

Friends may call at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home on Friday, October 7, beginning at 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm Friday afternoon. Rev. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund, 425 Fisher Street, Marquette, MI 49855.
