Hiltrud Lanczy

HERMAN, MI. – Hiltrud Lanczy, age 86, of Herman, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, November 22, 2013 at Bayside Village, with family at her side. The cause of death was congestive heart failure.

She was born in Luneburg, Germany on December 10, 1926, the daughter of the late Fritz and Hannah (Brese) Sehlmeyer. She married Dr. Tamas Lanczy in 1948 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1952. He preceded her in death. She spend 46 years of her life in Herman, but prior to that she had also lived in Morristown, NJ, North Eaton, OH, and Baraga, Mi.

Hiltrud was affectionately known as “Mamu” by those closest to her. Hiltrud “Mamu” had a heart of gold and will be greatly missed. She will be remembered for many things, but her kindness, compassion for others, love of nature, and love for family will carry on in the hearts of those who knew her. Warm and comforting, her blue eyes and friendly smile made everyone feel important and loved. She liked to crochet and many of her neighbors, friends, and family have her beautifully crocheted blankets to remember her as well. Hiltrud was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church.

Hiltrud is survived by her 5 children, 15 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren; Barbara (George) LaTendresse of Herman and their children Phil (Kathryn) LaTendresse (Jordan, Evelyn, Thomas) of Tapiola, MAJ Joe (Ivy) LaTendresse (Charlotte) of Watertowm NY, Morgan (Jamie) LaTendresse (Arianna) of Volo, IL; Dr. Bela (Lisa) Lanczy of Herman, and their children Kerstina (Mick) Wirtz (Mickey, Maddi, Saige) of Green Bay, WI, Bela (Jennifer) Lanczy (Ava, Jaron) of Green Bay, WI, CPT Lucas (Jamie) Lanczy (Lucas, Tessa, Mea) of L’Anse; Zoltan Lanczy of Grand Rapids, MI and his children Dr. Maija (Dr. John) Fish (Marian) of Milwaukee, Katie (Thomas) Wiesnewski of Milwaukee,Zachary Lanczy of Houghton, Emily (Cameron Rose) Lanczy of Manchester, United Kingdom; COL(R) Tibor (Taryn) Lanczy of Salida, CO, and their children, Bernie (Annie Overlin) LaForest (Melina, Rio) of Truckee, CA, Carol (Eli) Hooper (Leona) of Santa Fe, NM, Sarah (Pierson Grider) Lanczy of Lansing; Geza (Mary Pilotte) Lanczy of LaFayette, IN, Alec (Katie Sullivan) Marin of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Clark Lanczy of Ishpeming, Honorary grandson Dr. Mischa Doman of Arnheim, nephews COL (R) Gerhard (Ingeborg) Lauenstein of Oldenburg, Germany, and Detlev (Birgit) Lauenstein of Winsen, Germany.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L’Anse with Father James Ziminski, celebrant. The family will greet friends at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to Autism Speaks, a cause that Hiltrud strongly supported. Donations in her honor may be made by going to the website autismspeaks.org or can be mailed to: Autism Speaks, 1060 State Rd. 2nd Floor, Princeton, NJ 08540.
