Aspen Ridge holds Walking Club

On Feb. 16, the students at Aspen Ridge Elementary School attended a kick-off event that will have them walking, jogging, and running laps to be more active. Fifth grade teacher Jennifer Young and Principal Chris Marana explained how the Walking Club will work and motivated students to get moving and be fit. Students will keep track of the laps they complete and receive incentives and awards for every lap, with larger prizes for the students in each grade level who complete the most laps. The fifth grade students created a wellness team and will act as leaders for the Walking Club. Every fifth grade student will receive a FitBit activity tracker to monitor his or her heart rate, steps and distance each day. The Aspen Ridge school-wide Walking Club is being implemented to encourage physical activity with the support of MARESA as a part of the U.P. Health Project. This is a U.P.-wide grant project funded through the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.
