Spotlight: Zonta Club distributes $5,200 in grants

At its April meeting, the Zonta Club of the Marquette Area distributed $5,200 in grants to the community.

Every year Zonta provides grants to nonprofit organizations focused on improving the status of women and children of Marquette County. 2017 successful recipients include: YMCA of Marquette County, Lake Superior Village Youth and Family Center, Northern Michigan University’s Student Leader Fellowship Program, Girl Scouts of the Northerwestern Great Lakes, Planned Parenthood of Michigan, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette and Alger Counties, Marquette Care Clinic, Great Lakes Recovery Center, Just Believe, STAR Children’s Bereavement Services, and the Beacon House Wig Salon. In addition to the competitive grant recipients, the Zonta Club also gave $2,000 for the Trillium House Campaign to Build a Hospice House. The Marquette Alternative High School Z-Club gave $500 to the Sasawin Project, which helps survivors of domestic or sexual abuse create escape plans that include safe placement for their pets.
