Josh Thompson, left, is congratulated by Doug Kitchel, vice president of the Hiawatha Music Co-op Board for being this year’s winner of the Hiawatha Music Co-op’s scholarship to attend a weeklong summer session at the Augusta Heritage Center at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, W.Va. The scholarship provides tuition, room and board, which is about $900. This year the scholarship program was open to adults who have never attended a session at Augusta. Thompson was born and raised in Hartselle, Ala., and is an assistant professor of mathematics at Northern Michigan University. Not a musician in his youth, Thompson learned to play the guitar as an adult. The Augusta Heritage Center is internationally renowned for activities relating to traditional folk-life and folk arts of many cultures with an emphasis on the Appalachian region. The 36th annual Hiawatha Music Festival is set for July 18-20 at the Tourist Park in Marquette.
