Calumet man dies in vehicle

CALUMET– A Calumet man has died after sustaining a medical emergency while operating his vehicle.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post were dispatched to a traffic crash at Fourth Street and Scott Street in the village of Calumet around 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

On scene investigation and witness statements show that Jeffrey Ruona, 56, suffered a medical emergency while operating his vehicle. He lost control of the vehicle and accelerated while leaving the roadway before striking a parked vehicle and a coming to rest against a fence, according to a release issued by the MSP.

Ruona was unresponsive when approached by witnesses. Lifesaving efforts were attempted by Calumet Township First Responders and Mercy EMS personnel before he was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital where he was pronounced dead and was confirmed to have suffered from a medical condition.

Troopers were assisted on scene by Calumet Township First Responders and Mercy EMS.

The crash remains under investigation.
