Man dies following traffic accident

MARQUETTE — One person has died as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic crash that occured Monday in Chippewa County.

The crash occured around 3 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Riverside Drive and 7 mile Road in Bruce Township, according to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigation and evidence at the scene indicated a vehicle driven by Kirk Lee Mortinsen, 53, of Sault Ste. Marie, suffered a “catastrophic brake failure” at the intersection of Riverside Drive and 7 Mile Road, and was unable to stop at the stop sign. Mortinsen’s vehicle was then struck by a southbound vehicle.

According to police, both drivers were hosptialized for treatment after the accident. Mortinsen died as a result of his injuries Tuesday and the driver of the other vehicle was treated and released.

The investigation remains ongoing as additional infomraiton is collected, police said.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office was assited by the Michigan State Police, Sault Fire and Chippewa County Central dispatch during the incident.
