1st-degree homicide charge for inmate
MUNISING — A 23-year-old inmate at the Alger Correctional Facility is being charged with first-degree homicide and being a habitual offender in the July 20 death of his cellmate.
The victim was Rodriguez Montez Burks, 23, who had been serving sentences for fleeing a police officer-third degree, and receiving and concealing stolen property from a motor vehicle.
Investigators have not released details into his death.
The inmate being charged with the homicide, who was serving sentences for carjacking, assault with intent to commit murder and armed robbery, will be arraigned Sept. 12.
Man charged with negligent homicide
MUNISING — Timothy Preston, 64, of Marquette has been charged with negligent homicide and operating while intoxicated causing death following an Aug. 13 boating accident near Au Train Island in Alger County.
Robert Louis, 59, of downstate Lake Orion drowned in Lake Superior after police said large waves caused the seven occupants of a 19-foot wooden boat to fall overboard near the south side of the island.
Six of the occupants were rescued by the operator of a nearby pontoon boat and treated for hypothermia, but Louis swam toward the boat and could not be located. His body was found Aug. 14.
A preliminary examination for Preston has been set for Oct. 3.
Operating while intoxicated causing death is a 15-year felony while negligent homicide is a two-year high court misdemeanor.
